A-Z of ESOL

English Teaching Activities

A-Z of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) provides 26 motivating activities that focus on functional language skills, aimed at all levels of non-native English speakers living in English-speaking countries. The activities encourage ESOL students to be active citizens and participate fully in the country they live in. Through the context of real-life scenarios, students can practise reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as enhance their ICT, numeracy and literacy skills to increase their employability, progress to further study and interact with their local community.

The activities in this book use the 'social practices' approach, providing students with the functional language required to navigate real-world situtations in English-speaking countries. The activites use real-life tasks, encouraging students to learn about their local area and how to navigate the culture, bureaucracy and regulations within the country that they live in now.

English language learners benefit from the opportunities for language practice in context, and students living in English-speaking countries are fortunate to have so many opportunities. As well as introducing functional language through real-life contexts, the activities encourage students to seek opportunities for extra-curricular language acquisition through employment, volunteering and involvement in the local community. By embracing the tenets of Task-Based Learning and Communicative Language Teaching, the activities are designed to inspire students and give them the confidence to use their English outside the classroom.
